MORE than 30 junior sailors raced in the Peter Bartlett Cup on Sunday, 19 September at Roadford Lake.
The fun day of racing organised by South West Lakes Trust's Outdoor+Active Centre was well attended by both beginners and advanced junior sailors from eight-18 years old.
The weather was ideal for the race with force 3-4 south wind.
The young sailors performed very well on Picos, Feva's, Toppers and Bugs.
The advanced and the beginner categories of the race allowed for younger, less experienced participants to enjoy the thrill of racing.
Peter Bartlett MBE, the first patron of South West Lakes Trust and who held the position of chairman of the Royal Yachting Association for the South West region for 15 years, presented the prizes.
As past commodore of Brixham Yacht Club he promoted water sports for disabled people and emphasised that age should not be a barrier in taking up sailing.
Mr Bartlett said to the participants: 'Not all of you will get a prize today, but in my book all of you are winners here, being here and being active on the water. We must recognise that this wouldn't be possible without the support of your parents, please thank them. Well done parents!'
RESULTS: Advanced category winners: 1, Jacob Stitson, 2, Jack Stitson and 3, Jemma Stitson (all on Toppers). Beginner category: 1, Abigale Stowe (Topper), 2, Robbie Griffiths (Pico), and 3, Millie Davies and Richard Platts (Pico). Richard was one of the youngest participants of the race at only 8 years old.
