Feniton 2
Okehampton 1
FOR the second week running Argyle made hard work trying to overcome lower opposition. Feniton, who had a new manager, brought in youngsters from his second team and during the first half they made Argyle look poor.
Chris Dearing and Nick Drew made their first team appearance for many years and both had steady performances in what can only be described as one of Argyle's most uneventful games of the season.
Playing up the slope Argyle knew they would be in for a bombardment. They not only failed to win the first ball but all knock-downs fell to Feniton who turned the screw at every opportunity.
Argyle's main fault was struggling to hold on to possession long enough to mount serious attacks. Jason Sandford, Nic Pollard and Adam Mortimer were all below par.
Argyle's midfield did not give much cover to its defence and were punished with a sublime chip from 25 yards leaving keeper Richard Bailey rooted to the spot. Moments later they made it 2-0 with a miss-hit shot falling sweetly to another striker who drilled the ball home.
After the interval Argyle tried to play with a bit of passion and for long periods pinned Feniton back. But they did not create any clear-cut chances. Mike Vernon hit a couple of long-range efforts straight at the keeper as did Jason Sandford, with Adam Mortimer having several headers off target.
Neil Agnew made several runs down the left flank as did Aaron Bourne on the right after he came on for the last 20 minutes.
With virtually the last kick of the game Vernon struck a 25-yard thunderbolt into the top corner, but this was scant consolation for a lacklustre performance by Okehampton. Dramatic changes will have to be made to turn things around as Argyle entertain league leaders Budleigh Salterton at Simmons Park on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm. Players to meet at the clubhouse at 1.30pm.
