I WRITE with reference to the 'Dogs on Leads Order' recently imposed on the residents of and visitors to Tavistock by West Devon Borough Council. As a resident who frequently visits The Meadows, Abbey Walk, St John's Avenue and other public areas affected by the order, I would ask the council to consider acting to also mitigate against other nuisances and dangers prevalent therein. I refer particularly to teenagers and other young people who vandalise public property, drop copious volumes of litter and occasionally abuse or menace passers-by. The council might consider insisting that all such offenders are kept on leads by responsible adults! Furthermore, since the council appears to be unable or unwilling to differentiate between responsible and irresponsible dog owners, a corresponding 'Young People on Leads Order' should be passed covering anyone under the age of 25. Steve Hipsey Tavistock I WAS recently walking my dog up on the moors near Tavistock. Being a Times reader, I knew of the recent changes to the dog legislation and was carrying my dog's waste in my back pack, obviously separated from my sandwiches and wet weather clothing. I came across another walker whose dog has just deposited and the said walker carried on with his walk, oblivious to his pet's misdeeds. I thought it was prudent to make him aware of the recent changes and notified him of the new bylaws. He seemed a little taken back by my information and asked where the bins were to collect the waste, as he had a ten-mile walk ahead of him and did not want to carry the waste for the whole day. He said he was on holiday and had taken walking holidays in the Tavistock area for many years, but was completely naïve regarding the recent changes. He duly collected his waste and walked on, mumbling that this would be the last time he would holiday in this area. I was quite pleased with my input, until when the walker was about 200 metres away, I noticed him throw the bag containing the waste into the bracken. I then realised you can only do so much. A lot of, if not all, holiday makers and walkers are probably oblivious to the new rules. Perhaps a set of signs informing visitors of the bylaws and the fact they should 'pick up' and take their waste with them where no bins are provided, should be erected in all the popular Dartmoor parking areas. I am aware that this may cause some detrimental impact to the area's holiday businesses, but I feel it is only fair to keep people informed. Louise Street Tavistock
