THERE's an opportunity to step into a magistrate's shoes on Monday, October 20, at a free and interactive sentencing event in Tavistock called 'You be the Judge'.
People in Tavistock interested in finding out how justice is delivered are being invited to the event, part of the Community Justice Project.
Details of cases will be read out and the audience will then use keypads to vote on the sentence they feel is most appropriate for each crime.
The true outcomes of each case will then be revealed and explained by local magistrates, giving a behind-the-scenes insight into the role of magistrates and the justice system.
All cases are real, but with key elements changed to protect the identities of those involved.
A member of the magistrates' court legal team and magistrates will then talk through why the sentence was given, explaining what options were available for each crime and what factors were taken into consideration and why.
Representatives from criminal justice agencies including the courts, probation, the Crown Prosecution Service and the police will be available to answer questions.
Tori Tweedie, who works for Devon and Cornwall Criminal Justice Board, said: 'The aim of the "You Be The Judge" event is to help local people understand the different factors involved when magistrates sentence offenders.
'We hope this event will give local people an insight into sentencing — coming away with a better understanding of why certain decisions are made.'
There is no cost for this event, which takes place at the Tavistock Magistrates Court at 6pm.
Places will be on a first come, first served basis. There are steps leading up to the venue so disabled access is limited.
