THE West Devon Scratch League was played at Yelverton Golf Club with Yelverton, Elfordleigh, Staddon and Tavistock golf clubs playing a better ball medal on the first day, and then foursomes and singles medal competitions on the Sunday. The hot weather and lack of rainfall made the course tricky, but there were some respectable scores recorded. County golfers Adam Bridgewater and Jack Wallace (Yelverton) shot a 66 in the better ball on Saturday, with two eagles and two birdies. Only one shot behind were Dean Starkie and Tom Fox (Elfordleigh) with four birdies on their card. After the first day?s play Yelverton were in the lead with 14 points, with Tavistock second with 11 pts. On the second day Adam Bridgewater partnered Mark Blaber in the foursomes, and they shot five birdies on the front nine holes to score a highly creditable 69 in the foursomes on Sunday morning. The closest score was the Tavistock pair of George and Alan Gawman with a creditable 73, in testing conditions. The singles medal saw 32 competitors competing, not only for the team prize, but also the cup for the best individual score. Mark Blaber (Yelverton) and James Smith (Elfordleigh) featured highly with good scores of 73, but the score of the day belonged to Colin Nolan (Yelverton) with an excellent 70, net 67. The result of the overall competition saw the home team, Yelverton win with 54.5 pts; last year?s winners Staddon Heights were second with 40, Elfordleigh third with 34, and Tavistock fourth with 31.5 points. The Brian Bounsall Trophy, for the best team, and the Steer and Bearn Trophy for the best individual score were presented by the Yelverton club captain Ian Northey. Next year the competition will be held at Tavistock Golf Club.
