Yelverton v
Ottery St Mary
YELVERTON's first team slumped to a disappointing six wicket defeat against visiting Ottery St. Mary on Saturday.
Ottery won the toss and opted to field. Yelverton slumped to 9-3 with Ricky McDowell, Pete Garland and Rob Bennett all back in the pavilion - former Devon seamer Mark Woodman picking up two of the wickets. Skipper Rich West departed for 4 to Harrison to leave the score on 23-4 wickets.
The fifth wicket pair of Gul Khan and Geoff Brain put on a partnership of 36 to, but when Khan was dismissed for 27 with the score on 59, another three wickets fell for the addition of only six runs, all to the bowling of J Faulkner (3-25). Brain and new batsman Joel Avery put on a further 24 as the Bohemians edged towards three figures. Brain was bowled for 26 by the returning Woodman with the score on 89 and it was left to the 10th wicket pair of Joel Avery and Iain Cunningham to get the Bohemians over the 100 in a last wicket stand of 19. Woodman (4-24) bowled Avery for 19 in the 37th over to end the innings on 108, Cunningham was left 12 not out.
The nine unused overs meant that Ottery would have 54 overs in which to knock the runs off, and their opening pair of S Forbes and M Kirk put on 37 for the first wicket before West bowled Forbes for 18.
The ever reliable Geoff Brain kept things tight from the other end and was rewarded with the wicket of Kirk for 20 with the score on 51. With the back of the run-chase broken sensible batting would see Ottery home and despite a further wicket for Brain (2-20) and a wicket for Avery (1-26), the Otters cruised home on 110-4 off 29 overs. Skipper J Clements (32 n/o) and M Woodman (6 n/o) were there at the end. Yelverton will have Jez Stokes, Colin Broughton and Dave Scott coming back this week against Whitchurch.
