THE second round of the South West of England Open Winter Foursomes competition, sponsored by DHS Tool Supply Company, Plymouth, was played at Yelverton Golf Club on November 5 in conditions more associated with summer. In the longest match of the day John Chapman and Tim Shobrook (Yelverton) beat professional Chris Gill and his partner Darren Dobson at the 22nd hole. Gill had played some outstanding shots and was unlucky not to hole some chips, but the Yelverton pair played well to hang on. Yelverton professional, Tim McSherry and his partner Gary Hawking played some fine golf to beat Tony Jeffs and his wife Margaret (Hele Park) three and two. They were three under on the 16th tee, having had five birdies, but their opponents also played well, with two birdies/net eagles. Yelverton's David Ayres and Seb Treglown were up all the way until the 16th but allowed their opponents Simon Bawden and Christine Clayton (Churston) back into the match on subsequent holes, and finally lost on the 18th. An all Yelverton match at the end of the field saw a close match, with 13 year old Joe Yorke, with his partner county team player Adam Bridgewater, take on Clive O'Sullivan and his partner Andy Price. The match was finally decided on the 19th hole with Yorke and Bridgewater taking the honours due to a better short game. The third round will be played on Sunday, November 19.
