A TAVISTOCK cheese shop has won gold at the Devon County Show with its specially aged Cornish Yarg for the first time.

Country Cheeses is not new to award winning, having received the top prize last year for the smelliest cheese 'Little Stinky', but this is the first time it has been recognised in this category.

As well as making its own cheese, Country Cheeses has an underground cheese store where it ages other cheeses.

Gary Jungheim, who owns the shop with his wife, Elise, said it was a real honour: 'Supermarkets promote themselves by saying taste the difference, well here you do actually taste the difference and it means something.

'Cornish Yarg is a nice cheese anyway, but we have taken it to university and given it a bit of a degree.'
