BUILDING work began on Callington Town Hall this week to improve the layout, increase accessibility and refurbish the kitchens.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of March and will cause some minor disruption.

In a letter to town hall customers, town clerk Vernon Anderson said existing bookings at the hall would be managed but smaller groups might be moved from their booked room to another room within the building.

Plans are to create a new access corridor to the rear of the town hall from the reception through to the old bar/committee room area and then behind the kitchens through to the council chamber.

At the same time the kitchens will undergo refurbishment and temporary facilities will be provided in the council chamber foyer, although they will be limited.

Mr Anderson said: 'If we have to move anyone to a smaller room we will do our utmost to notify people of the change as early as possible and will assist anyone with disabilities if required to do so. There may be some noise but we will ask the appointed builders to keep the noise levels down during occupancy periods.'

He added that the disabled access to the council chamber would be via the fire door from the pannier market.
