WITH all the recent publicity surrounding the iniquitous council tax, one doesn?t have to travel far to see an example of profligate spending by our council.

For three weeks now, a gang of workmen has been constructing a mini-roundabout on the Plymouth Road adjacent to the cemetery. I use the word ?constructing? in its loosest sense, as they have spent all that time re-aligning ? by just a few inches ? about 10m of kerb and painting a white circle and a few other signs on the road.

Exactly why a mini-roundabout was deemed necessary is far from clear. It appears of questionable road safety value, of dubious traffic management value and given the time it has taken to ?construct? and the negative affect that traffic hold-ups must have had on businesses in the town, hardly represents value for money.

I wonder if those responsible for such fiascos even care what the public think of their ?make work? schemes?
