WITH 133 different exhibitors, South West Forest?s fourth annual Woodfair held recently at Roadford Lake was the biggest to date.
Despite a wet start to the day, 2,500 visitors came to see the event with the range of exhibitors covering furniture makers, boat builders, forestry organisations, environmental groups, wildlife and conservation groups and local food producers.
There was a full demonstration programme that included a falconry display, horse logging, sawmilling, thatching, charcoal making, green timber frame carpentry, blacksmith, wood-turning, hurdle-making and many traditional woodcrafts.
In addition there was entertainment from the Wren Trust Roots Band, a circus clown, a Punch and Judy show and a hurdy gurdy musical entertainer. There were also opportunities for visitors to make their own small items out of wood such as whistles, bird boxes and jewellery.
This year?s woodworking competitions were keenly contested with 54 entries spread over six categories. Local winners were Ben Watts from Tavistock, who came top in the rustic section, Matthew McCann from Yelverton, who gained a second prize in fine furniture, and David Trewin from Callington, who had a third prize in utility.
