A WEST Devon organisation which addresses the problem of domestic violence is appealing for volunteers to help women who dread the sound of the key in the lock as their partner returns home ? it can mean the start of having to cope with physical and verbal abuse.

West Devon?s Women?s Aid, which offers a completely confidential helpline for women affected by domestic violence, is starting a new volunteers training programme later this month.

West Devon?s Women?s Aid volunteers will listen and offer support and can meet with callers if they wish.

Callers do not have to give their name. The helpline number is 01837 55228, Monday to Friday, 12-3pm.

One in four women will experience domestic abuse at some time in their lives. Statistics show that three women are murdered every week by their partners or ex-partners in England and Wales.

Domestic abuse can take many different forms, including being stopped from seeing friends and family or being threatened, assaulted or humiliated.

If you are a woman who would like to help the project, the new volunteers training programme is starting on April 20.
