A WOMAN had to wait 50 minutes for an ambulance after being hit by a car as she went to cross a road in Tavistock on Tuesday night.

The accident happened at 5.40pm on Vigo Bridge Road in the town centre. Passers-by and runners meeting at the garage next door went to help her.

They held umbrellas over the woman, who was lying on the road close to the kerb and wrapped covers around her. The occupant of a flat overlooking the road brought out towels to cover her in the rain.

Police were on the scene in five minutes to close the road and found the driver of the car who had parked around the corner. He was breathalysed but was not over the limit for alcohol.

An ambulance arrived at 6.30pm and the injured woman was taken to Derriford Hospital with a suspected fractured wrist and suspected fractured ribs. Any witnesses can contact the police on 101 quoting log 607 of Tuesday, December 12.
