POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a major road accident in Tavistock in which an elderly woman was killed and another injured.

Margaret Jackson, 72, from Tavistock, was the rear seat passenger in a Vauxhall Nova. She and two friends were heading towards Yelverton from Tavistock on the Plymouth Road, when the car broke down just before midday last Friday.

Mrs Jackson and the driver, Bettina Lewis, were still in the car when a 7.5-tonne truck carrying a mechanical digger was in collision with it.

Mrs Jackson was freed from the wreckage by local firefighters and was flown to Derriford Hospital by air ambulance. She died later that evening.

Mrs Lewis, who lives in Yelverton, was taken to hospital with what is thought to be whiplash injuries. She has since been released from hospital.

The lorry driver, Simon Sweet, 29, from Kingsbridge, was reported to be uninjured.

The road was closed for most of the afternoon for police crash investigation officers to attend the scene. Traffic was diverted around a one-way system along the Whitchurch Road one way and through the lay-by the other causing extensive delays.

MPC Dave James of Plympton Traffic would like to talk to anyone who witnessed the crash, particularly motorists travelling into Tavistock at the time. He can be contacted on 0990 777444.
