THE first round of the South West of England Open Winter Foursomes competitions, sponsored by Brittany Ferries, was held at Yelverton Golf Club on Sunday October 14 and Sunday October 21. Players from all over the South West, including club professionals, entered the annual competition.
The weather on the first day provided a traditional opening to the competition, with mist and light drizzle to welcome competitors, but a high standard of golf was played on the moorland course.
Martin and Shirley Ruth from Torquay had a resounding victory over Pete Doe and Dave Riley from St Mellion 8 & 7, and the local pairing of John Gilmore and Mike Beveridge proved too strong for Sue Henson and Gary Green from Stover, winning 7&6. Chris Harper and Tom Ryder from Wrangaton had the longest match, concluding their match at the 20th hole.
The second day was played in fine weather, and the play matched the conditions. The Tavistock pair of S Gilder and R Gawman beat the Staddon pair G Box and D Roberts 5&3. Tony Finnigan and Tavistock professional Dominic Rehag had a close match against Scott Davey and Alan Gawman, but won on the 19th hole.
There was a fine match between two strong teams, Neil Holman and Paul Hendriksen of Churston beat Colin Nolan and Adam Bridgewater 2&1. The Yelverton professional, Tim McSherry, teamed up with his pupil, Laura Eastwood, and beat the mixed pair from Churston, Simon Bawden and Christine Clayton 3&2.
Junior players did well, with Jamie Easton-Johns and Ross Whitelock from Staddon Heights beating their St Mellion opponents, B Nicholson and A Bratchley, 5&4. Tom Squire and Ross Northey from Yelverton also did exceedingly well to beat the strong pair from Thurlestone, David Eva and Stephen Pike on the 20th hole.
The second round is due to be played on Sunday. Spectators are welcome to attend to watch some of the best local golfers in action.
