THE sun shone between showers on young tennis players from primary and secondary schools across Cornwall taking part in the School Sport Partnerships County Tennis Finals held at the Heron Centre in Newquay last week. The two days of competition marked the culmination of a series of tennis events for U12s and U11s which have been held across the county. The events have been driven by the school frameworks written by the Lawn Tennis Association and the school competition managers in Cornwall who have worked in partnership with local tennis clubs and coaches to stage events for primary and secondary school aged children. The finals were led by Paul Roberts, the Heron Centre's resident tennis coach. The U12s category included the top teams from the Callington, Poltair and Penryn School Sports Partnership Finals. Outstanding performances were given by Helston, Penair and Callington, with the U12s title finally going to the talented players from Tretherras School. Later in the week the U11s played through the showers in their exciting finals day. These pupils had competed in cluster events with local primary schools, and then in SSP finals across all the districts to win a place at the Heron Centre. The schools which took part in the county final were St Johns, Mithian, Callington, St Germans, Mount Charles, Newquay Junior Penpols and Leedstown. The level of tennis at the competition was excellent, with fair play and sportsmanship an important factor of the event. Results: U12s winners Tretherras, 2nd place Callington; U11s winners Penpols , 2nd Place Mount Charles.
