LAST Saturday's Okehampton Argyle fund raising day went off well despite the rainy weather, and an enjoyable day was had by all. A good crowd turned up and they were treated to two entertaining games of football.

At mid-day, Argyle thirrds took on a team of Okehampton Veterans containing many great names from the past.

The Vets showed that they had lost none of their silky skills although perhaps the pace was a little lacking!

The thirds built up a 3-0 lead with goals from Dave Smith, Ollie Squire and John Coakley but the Veterans seemed to really come back in the last quarter of an hour. A quick count of the players explained why as the Veterans were now fielding 15 against the 3rd team's 11. Eventually this new tactic paid off when Graham Sage was brought down in the area and stepped up to fire home a perfect penalty to see the match end at 3-1. The Veterans joined the thirds in the bar after the game and showed that that was one area where they had lost none of their old ability.

Following on from this game, Argyle firsts took on a District All Stars team selected by Stuart Cann.

The All Stars included ex Football League and current Bodmin Town keeper Kevin Miller and Tiverton Town centre-forward Adam Mortimer together with a selection of great players from local sides Hatherleigh Town, Chagford, Halwill and South Zeal.

The firsts took the lead when Mark Burdus fired home an unstoppable shot past Miller from the edge of the box, but the All Stars had levelled by half time with a well taken goal from Adam Mortimer.

In the second half, Mortimer went on to complete his hat-trick with two superb goals, one following some great work by Harley Cann, and with ten minutes left, it looked all over.

But Argyle firsts thought otherwise and came back to draw 3-3 with two brilliant headed goals from captain James Williams and Brad Ausden.

In order to obtain a result, the teams decided on a penalty shoot-out and this went the way of the All Stars 5-4.

The club would like to thank the team managers for arranging the day and all the players for giving up their time and providing such entertaining football. Also to referee Spencer House, who handled both games in just the way required. Thanks are also due to the bar staff and club officials for turning out in numbers for a Saturday in the off season. .
