Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one West
Okehampton Argyle 2
Perranporth 1
OKEHAMPTON put in a tremendous performance to take all three points from this match against fourth placed Perranporth. This was a game that was full of good football from both sides and it was not decided until three minutes from time.
Both sides played progressive attacking football from the kick-off. Argyle had chances to be two or three up in the first ten minutes as the speed of their front runners Ben Waters, Frankie Nomah-Koneh and Ed Squire caused problems for the visitors' defence.
Perranporth also looked dangerous as both sides went looking for the first goal. This came on 16 minutes when Argyle keeper Harry Geering, trying to gather a loose ball in the box, fouled a Perranporth forward. He was given no chance with the resulting spot kick, which was dispatched perfectly by the visitors' Mikey Davies. Showing great team spirit, Argyle fought their way back into the match and only good work by Perranporth keeper John Mitchell denied them.
Ten minutes before half-time, the deserved equaliser came. Good work by Ben Waters on the left of the box saw him set up Ed Squire on the edge of the penalty area. His fierce shot could only be parried by Mitchell, and free scoring Frankie Nomah-Koneh crashed the rebound into the net.
The second half began with Argyle putting a lot of pressure on the visitors' defence, but Mitchell was equal to everything the home side could throw at him.
Perranporth began to look dangerous on the break as the Argyle legs began to tire. Dale Chadwick and Steve Williams were brought on for the last 15 minutes and helped to refresh the midfield at this vital stage.
The game was now finely balanced on a knife-edge and the spectators were kept constantly entertained throughout this exciting exhibition of football. Argyle were not to be denied and continued to press for the winner. With three minutes left, defender Stuart Entwhistle joined the attack on the right side of the box and drove a low cross across the face of the Perranporth goal for Steve Williams to fire home from six yards. This was no more than Argyle deserved. In fact with better finishing, the home side could have won by more, but all credit to both sides for making this such an enjoyable game.
Man of the match for Argyle was 16-year-old full back Corey Burns in his first full game for the first team. He showed great composure all afternoon and did not put a foot wrong.
The whole team performed well but special mention must go to Luke Alden in midfield and front runner Ben Waters who worked tirelessly.
n This Saturday Argyle firsts are away to Dartmouth, kick-off 2.30pm in the Throgmorton League Cup; in the Devon and Exeter division four Argyle seconds are home to Hemyock, ko 3pm while in D and E division eight Argyle thirds are away to Lapford seconds, ko 3pm.
