GET the feel-good factor and help save hens from slaughter by becoming a host for the British Hen Welfare Trust’s (BHWT) rehoming project.
Are you an animal lover and do you have a stable or barn you could lend out once in a while?
This will involve a barn or stable enclosure being available for an event once every four to six weeks where you’ll be helping hundreds of caged hens go off to enjoy a free range retirement as pets.
The charity is also looking for someone to co-ordinate these events, though this does not have to be the same person who is hosting the re-homing.
Gaynor Davies, the BHWT’s head of operations, said: ‘We have successfully set up volunteer teams across the UK and are now looking to set up a new collection point in the Tavistock or Liskeard areas. Our hens are egg-stremely popular and we need someone who can lend us a stable and/or barn enclosure for an afternoon once every four to six weeks while we re-home our gorgeous hens — and we need a bit of parking too.’
As well as re-homing commercial hens, the charity educates the public about how they can make a difference to hen welfare and encourages support for the British egg industry. Its ultimate aim is to see consumers and food manufacturers buying only UK produced, free range eggs, resulting in a strong, British egg industry where all commercial laying hens enjoy a good quality life.
If you have a love of animals and have somewhere secure to keep hens for the afternoon once every six weeks get in touch with Gaynor on 01884 860084 for an informal chat.
