ST ANDREW?S Women?s Institute in Whitchurch is celebrating after scooping a £5,000 lottery grant for educational courses. The grant from the Awards for All programme will be spent on a series of initiatives aimed at offering new experiences for members, enhancing skills and offering outlets for creativity. ?The current approach to adult education provision means that many members have not been able to find the evening courses they want locally,? said branch president June James. ?When we asked our members what they wanted to apply for there was overwhelming support for the idea of short courses in a variety of subjects. ?Sometimes, people want to try something new for fun without necessarily committing to a whole year of lessons or getting a qualification at the end of it.? St Andrew?s members are busy planning the programme of events ? the more active elements include swimming lessons, pilates and yoga, self-defence and guided moorland walks. Artistic courses include drawing, watercolours and garden design and ?IT for the terrified? will assist those needing practical help with computers.
