WHITCHURCH Women's Institute looks destined to close unless some new blood comes forward to take the group into the future.

All business has been suspended for three years because the institute can longer find a committee.

For 70 years the WI has been entertaining ladies from the village but members now spend more time on paper work than having fun.

Press secretary Kit Cook said the committee's job was now a full time job and with most of the group aged 65 or over it was not something they wanted to do anymore.

'We have been having this problem for ten years on and off but there has always been someone who jumps up and saves it,' she said.

'It looks like this time the WI will close unless we get some new blood coming forward.'

The group has been meeting in The Stables after the village hall was closed and demolished last year but it was very small to accommodate the 24 members if they had a speaker and a slide show, said Mrs Cook, who added that Whitchurch was due to have a new hall built in the near future.

She said it very sad to see the WI suspended but luckily there were some other groups in the area which some of the members hoped to attend.

Over the years Whitchurch WI has been very active in the community with a Keep Britain Tidy Campaign, making a parish map and conducting a survey of the churchyard amongst many other activities.

The WI assets, such as trophies and china, will be kept in trust for the next three years after which time they will be donated to the community or the county WI.
