HORRABRIDGE will be lit up on New Year's Eve — a spectacular firework display has been organised to announce the start of the new Millennium.

Funds have been raised by Horrabridge 2000 committee over the last few months for the display which will take place in the garden of the London Inn. A beacon will also be lit in Weir Park.

The money was raised from a variety of local activities including an auction of promises and a car treasure hunt. A further fundraising event will be a joint Christmas draw with the Horrabridge Cavaliers to be held at the Leaping Salmon on December 11.

To mark the Year 2000, plans are afoot to enhance the centre of the village. A small area adjacent to the bridge and opposite the Leaping Salmon, which is often used as a meeting point by walkers and visitors, will be repaved and will have three new seats, a local information board and a granite flower planter.

Dartmoor National Park Authority has agreed to help finance the project and Sampford Spiney and Horrabridge WI has paid for the three seats. Both the seats and the beacon for New Year's Eve are currently being manufactured by Dartmoor Prison.

Committee chairman Mike Jessop said: 'The celebrations and the village enhancements have been developed in response to last year's village questionnaire and will pave the way to developing further projects which have been identified by residents in Horrabridge.

'We are all really grateful to the Dartmoor prisoners for the help they are giving us and to all the other organisations who have contributed.'
