'FANTASTIC', 'brilliant' and 'the best display I've ever seen' were some of the comments made by members of the public as they left the Tavistock Lions Club's annual firework display held last Saturday in the Meadows.

The sparkling display was set to music starting with the theme music from the Apprentice TV series and culminating with the final part of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture — and some very loud explosions.

The display was staged by Tavistock-based Two Tigers Fireworks Ltd, who earlier this year came first in a national firework championship competition held in Herefordshire.

Lions spokesman Steve Grummitt said that if prizes had been given out on Saturday, Two Tigers would have gone home with a bag full of gold medals for such a magnificent display.

Steve said: 'The club does not consider the event to be a fund raiser but a service to the community where families can enjoy fireworks in a safe environment.

'With the crowd on Saturday coming from as far away as Liskeard,  Launceston and Plymouth, we more than covered our costs so we will be able to boost our charity account which will be used to support local good causes and charities, as well as some of the Lions International projects.'

The Lions would like to thank Tavistock Town Council for the use of the Meadows, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service for supplying emergency cover, John Collacott for the PA system and everybody who came along to watch.
