OKEHAMPTON's recently opened Room 13 is now offering a wide range of services for young people in the area. The drop-in youth centre on James Street is there to help all young people aged from eleven to 25. It is now several months since it opened its doors to offer information and support services, as well as a welcoming social space for young people, and there are now a number of regular events and meetings running from the centre. On Monday evenings from 6.30pm until 8.30pm, the centre runs its girls-only group, GAL, where girls aged 13 to 19 can anjoy a varied, fun and exciting programme ranging from arts and crafts to personal safety and confidence building activities. Wednesday evenings see the centre hosting a Youth Café, where young people can buy food, play pool and join in games and quizzes. At present this is aimed at the 12-16 age group, but there are plans to begin sessions for older teenagers at other times. A young parents' group — Mini Me — has also been set up at the centre and holds meetings on Thursday lunchtimes from 12 until 2pm. Devon Youth Service has also recently set up a youth cafe in North Tawton. 'The Yellow Submarine' takes place at North Tawton Youth and Community Centre from 7.30-9.30pm, offering young people the choice of taking part in activities or just spending time with friends. For more information about any of the services offered by Devon Youth Service in either Okehampton or North Tawton, call 01837 55444, or speak to youth worker Cassie on 07973375279 — and look out for further updates about upcoming events in the Okehanpton Times.
