THE first St George's Day poetry competition for schools in this area brought in a large number of excellent entries from budding poets. Children had to describe in verse 'What I like about England.' The prize for the best school entry went to Spreyton Primary School, who won a cheque for £150 for their joint efforts. The first individual prize went to Nicola Elson of Okehampton Primary School , who won a bicycle; a second prize of £50 went to Esme Shea of Spreyton Primary; a third prize of £25 to Dominic Wooldridge of Okehampton College; and runner-up prizes of £12.50 went to Ashleigh Standford of Okehampton Primary and Harriet Brain of Okehampton College. An Adventure Day at Okehampton Youth Hostel was also jointly won by two pupils from Spreyton School. The competition organiser Derek Godfrey-Brown said that many other excellent poems had been entered into what was a very close competition. He thanked the town council, the Rotary Club, Okehampton Hamlets council and Okehampton Glass for their support.
