IN continuation of the saga relating to the so called 'rural gateway' I would like to take this opportunity to voice my support and agreement to the comments, made earlier, by Messrs Cartwright, Taylor and Williams. There is little that I can add without being boringly repetitive.

I am, however, surprised that there has been no reaction from the cycling fraternity, because, now, in any tumble or crash situation, the gateway must surely create very much more serious dangers to cyclists who will have to contend with the granite setts and/or the sharp barbs of already damaged heavy duty re-enforcement steel netting. Also, there is no proper drainage.

Recently we were advised that this section of road was to be closed for five days from November 6. Could it be, I wonder, that the dream of Ann Cartwright is coming true and the powers-that-be have decided to revert this section of road back to the way it was ? I doubt it; and, I suspect it is probably another instance of the laying of the optic cable going wrong for yet another time.

Finally, I take note of a continuing theme that seems to be running through the comments made by many of your correspondents, not just in respect of the rural gateway, but on other more general topics.

We are supposed to live in a democratic society. Democracy, according to many encyclopaedic volumes is described as, literally, rule by the people (from the Greek demos 'people' and kratos 'rule').

Thinking about the Bedford Square debacle and now, the rural gateway stupidity (plus a few others), I have to ask myself: what happened to democracy?

Next question is: who cares ?
