IT could be the world?s biggest-ever Scotch egg. Last week, Okehampton bar manager Gary Dodden from The King?s Arms faced up to the Scotch egg of all Scotch eggs, when he attempted to munch his way through a whopping two-pound monster created from a whole ostrich egg. The gargantuan snack was created by keen Okehampton cook Gilly Gilbert, who often provides food for the pub?s skittles team. ?It started as a joke,? she said. ?Gary kept asking when I was going to bring more scotch eggs into the pub and I said ?I?ll make you one that?ll shut you up for months?.? The ostrich egg ? equivalent in size to 24 hen?s eggs ? took Gilly two and a quarter hours to hard-boil. ?I didn?t have a saucepan big enough, so I had to keep turning it, and topping it up with fresh water,? she said. Turning it into a Scotch egg then took a whole pound of sausagemeat. Gary managed to eat around half of the final calorie-laden creation ? a feat he is keeping quiet from his doctor. ?I couldn?t do anything afterwards,? he admitted. The other half of the egg was shared among customer in the pub. Gill said: ?Everyone said it tasted wonderful ? not a lot different from a hen?s egg.? She is now trying to dream up new culinary curiosities to test Gary and his customers.
