AN Okehampton College student has claimed a place in the top one percent of the nation?s intelligentsia. Fourteen-year-old Chanelle Gilbertson (pictured right) was one of ten Okehampton College students to take the Mensa test earlier this month. To qualify for membership of Mensa, applicants must prove themselves to have an IQ in the top two percent of the population, by scoring 132 or more on a Mensa test. Chanelle easily exceeded this, with her IQ score of 162. By contrast, the average IQ is just 100. Before joining Okehampton College, Chanelle was a pupil at Okehampton Primary School. Proud mum Rachel said: ?Both schools have played a big part in her success. Thanks to them, she really loves going to school.? Chanelle is part of Okehampton College?s gifted and talented programme and recently took her level nine SATS (or Standard Assessment Tasks), gaining level seven or eight in all her subjects. Mum Rachel said: ?She?s done really well, because I?m disabled so she needs to help me a lot at home. ?Despite that, though, she always manages to do all her homework. She doesn?t like people making a fuss, but we?re all really proud of her.?
