A SPECIAL anniversary will be celebrated at Bridestowe Cricket Club's Millaton ground next month — the 40th consecutive visit of touring side

XXX Camberley.

The team have been played Bridestowe on the Whitsun Bank Holiday Sunday ever since 1962 — and have not missed a single year.

Phil Down, secretary of Bridestowe Cricket Club, said: 'It all started when a Major Bobby, who was stationed at Camberley Staff College, was a house guest at Great Bidlake Manor.

'He obviously went down to the village pub and challenged the cricket team to a game.

'He brought a side down and they've been coming ever since.'

Phil said the XXX refers to the number of runs scored by the team in the initial match at Bridestowe.

Mike Stone ,of Camberley, succeeded the Major in bringing the side to Bridestowe — and following his death, his son, Richard, has taken over.

Phil said: 'We've invited as many past players we could track down of both teams to the anniversary tea. It's the second generation of getting the match together now.'

The teams will also enjoy an after-match dinner at the White Hart in Bridestowe.
