RESIDENTS in Lamerton have made a stand against motorists who are ‘constantly speeding’ through their village.
Makeshift ‘30’ signs have appeared in the village in the past two weeks on the sides of houses, gates and even flying high on top of scaffolding for all motorists to see.
This is the second protest of this type to take place in recent history at Lamerton.
It started with a letter which was circulated to all villagers by Lamerton resident Yorkie Malone who found that speeding has increased, especially during lockdown.
In the letter, Yorkie asked every resident to display a 30mph sign on their property as there were ‘too many people speeding through the village’.
‘The point is to try and get an average speed camera, like the one in St Mellion. Mary Tavy and on the moor is the same with people speeding and not paying any attention. Horrabridge is the same and they even have a speed camera. I have spoken to the police about this and they said speeding is a big issue all over the country,’ said Yorkie.
In response to the call from Yorkie, many residents made their own signs to remind motorists to respect the speed limit.
Yorkie added: ‘The only people driving around at the moment are local as we have no tourists here at the minute because of lockdown.
‘People are fed up with this — and it’s not just the people who live on the main road in the village that have had enough, it’s also the people who have to walk on the road and are now scared to use the road for fear of their safety. People drive too fast.
‘When the signs went up last time it worked, it made people slow down, but since then people have not continued to slow down, they have got faster.’
