Character Builders South West Ltd from Throwleigh beat the cream of the country's builders to become the UK's 'best small renovation project builder' at the 10th Master Builder of the Year awards which took place on Friday.

Phil Spencer, presenter of Channel 4 television 'Location, Location, Location' presented the award to four brothers and their company Character Builders South West Ltd, for their work on a beautiful garden room extension for the 16th century listed home of Richard and Anne Jones.

The task of the four Diffey brothers was to create Richard and Anne Jones' dream garden room completely in keeping with the nature of the 500-year-old house in Dunsford, using traditional materials such as cob, thatch and limewash to mirror the original construction.

Client, Anne Jones, said: 'We knew we were in safe hands with the Diffey brothers. The way they kept us informed and kept to plan was fantastic. They excelled in terms of care and attention to detail, as well as clearing up on site. Best of all was the spirit in which they carried out the project that made them so brilliant – they had a real feeling for the house. All problems were resolved together and it really felt as if we were working as a team on the project. The whole thing was a great experience.'

The 10th Master Builder of the Year awards, a nationwide search by the Federation of Master Builders to find the best builders in Britain, tests the entrant's technical ability together with their customer service skills.  The awards are unique, as every entrant must be nominated by a satisfied customer. Character Builders triumphed to win the national award in the Small Renovation Project category, which is sponsored by Hilti and Yell.

Speaking at the Awards ceremony, FMB director general, Richard Diment said: 'We are looking for solid craftsmanship, excellent customer service and a delighted client. The awards give clients a chance to publicly thank their builder both for their excellent work and for the consideration shown to them throughout the build.

'For us it is heartening to see that so many clients, such as Richard and Anne Jones, continue to invest in improving their properties, as well as considering the energy efficiency and sustainability of their homes. Our congratulations go to Character Builders for this well-deserved award, but equally our thanks go to Richard and Anne Jones who nominated them for the award.'
