A SPORTSWOMAN and transplant patient from Spreyton has been representing the UK in a prestigious sports event this week.

Wendy Sincock is taking part in the World Transplant Games, taking place between June 17-24 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The UK team of 133 athletes will join 1,000 others from 55 countries across the world, all of whom have undergone an organ transplant.

Supported by the International Olympic Committee, the games represent the largest organ donor awareness event in the world, featuring a week-long series of sporting events.

The games are designed to highlight the desperate need for organ donors.

Athletes are selected for Team UK following their outstanding performances at the British Transplant Games, which are held annually.

Wendy won four gold medals for swimming, including the overall trophy for best in pool in her age group. She won two gold medals at last year's Chinese Transplant Games, winning the 100m freestyle and the 200m medley.

Wendy had a kidney transplant 13 years ago this October.

She is competing in five events this year — the 50 and 100 metres backstroke, 50 and 100 metres freestyle, and the 50 metres butterfly.

Wendy said: 'I have been training hard, and have joined the Okehampton Masters.

' "Sir Nick" Bowles has been a gem and helped and trained me at the masters swimming sessions. I do appreciate his help so very much.

'I have only just started to try the butterfly. I really enjoy the stroke, but I need more practice!'

Wendy returns to the UK on June 27, hopefully with medals packed in her suitcase.
