Wellington 3 Tavistock 15 TAVISTOCK earned two league points with this victory at Wellington on Saturday to keep the pressure on the leaders in the Cornwall and Devon division. Tavistock started well and put Wellington under pressure, dominating the lineout through Andy Hunt and Darren Cole and winning good primary possession from the scrummage which became stronger as the game wore on. But Tavistock were unable to convert pressure into points, despite Lee Greatrex, Mike Lyddon and Joe Lane all having chances. Tavistock did not have it all their own way and on one occasion some desperate defence was called for from Sam Smerdon to keep the line intact. At half-time the teams changed over at three points each thanks to a penalty for Tavistock by Josh Sutton which was answered by Parsons for Wellington. Early in the second half Tavistock lost Jake Phillips and he was replaced by Steve Rush, whose experience helped them to keep the pressure on their hosts. Fifteen minutes into the half Tavistock took the lead. They won a scrum against the head on halfway and scrum half broke on the blind side and sprinted in at the corner. Tavistock looked secure and kept Wellington pinned deep in their own territory. From this pressure Tavistock increased their lead with fewer than five minutes remaining when Jude Rotton drove over the line after a period of prolonged pressure exerted by the pack. This coming weekend Tavistock entertain St Austell at Sandy Park in a Cornwall and Devon League game when they will be looking to reverse their early season defeat when visiting the Cornish side. Kick-off 2.30pm.
