Kelly College 1st XV 28
Wellington School 1st XV 6
KELLY shrugged off the incessant rain to produce some thrilling rugby in beating Wellington for the tenth successive year.
Wellington scored first with a penalty after just five minutes. But the crowd did not have to wait long for the Kelly reply as Richard Morris finished off an expansive move to score in the corner.
Ten minutes later, the Wellington defence was outflanked by some crisp passing in the backs to give Paul Lidster a stroll to the line. Full back, Oliver Pitts, came close in the corner and number 8 Jonathan Bourne was hauled down a few metres short, so Kelly had to settle for a 10-3 half-time advantage.
The second half started in the same way as the first with a Wellington penalty and again the Kelly riposte was dynamic and immediate, with Paul Lidster scoring his second after a superb outside break by Mark Slee.
With the Kelly lineout securing fast, quality ball, further tries were bound to come.
Second row Andrew Barwick scored his first try for the college with a powerful spin and drive from close quarters and Slee rounded off proceedings with a fine individual score after an incisive burst from centre, Mark Bloxham. Slee also kicked a penalty.
