YELVERTON Cricket Club hosted the annual awards presentation for their junior section at Yelverton War Memorial Hall last weekend. Despite poor weather, the event was well supported by more than 50 players and families. As well as the presentation of the awards, each age-group manager gave a brief review of the 2007 season and outlined plans for the 2008 season. The presentations were made by first XI captain Rob Guy. The awards were donated by third XI captain Brian Spear. U11 award winners: David Ackford, batsman of year; Daniel Cooper, bowler of year; Matthew Adams, all-rounder of year. Congratulations also go to David Ackford who has been selected for the Devon U12s training squad. U13 award winners: Ed Ames, batsman of year; Nathaniel Rookes, bowler of year; Tom Turner, all- rounder of year. U15 award winners: Tom Watkins, batsman of year; Matt Tamsett, bowler of year; Rob Bennett, all- rounder of year. In recognition of the historic wartime links with the former RAF Harrowbeer airfield, the Yelverton junior teams have been renamed as follows for the 2008 season: U9s, the 'Spitfires'; U11s, the 'Hurricanes'; U13s, the 'Typhoons' ; U15s, the 'Whirlwinds.' Winter indoor training re-starts for the U11 and U13 squads on Sunday February 3, from 4pm to 6pm. Coaching will be taken by UKCC level one and two coaches.
