Tavistock 10

Torrington 29

A DISAPPOINTING performance from Tavistock enabled second-place Torrington to edge their way one step further to promotion on Saturday.

A difficult side to beat on their own turf, Torrington's record at Tavistock has been poor in the past. Their position in the league this season, however, reflects a well drilled and committed team who denied Tavistock the opportunity to inflict any serious impact on the final score.

Playing down the park in the first half, Tavistock, sponsored by South West Acrylics, were unable to keep possession long enough to convert it to serious pressure on the Torrington line.

In contrast, Torrington kept the ball tight and used their mobile forwards to drive the ball within scoring distance. These tactics were punctuated with a number of infringements in the rucks and mauls. The referee seemed unaware of any foul play, but penalised Tavistock when they reacted. All but one of the opposition's tries were scored in the first half, and several penalties.

Tavistock improved in the second half, and the pack secured a fraction more of the ball. When this was supplied to the backs, however, they were plagued by a number of handling errors.

One of the exceptions was a well taken try by Sean Buttle, who dashed over for a try on the wing. Adam Bridgewater converted and kicked a difficult penalty, at least giving Tavistock the benefit of double figures.
