A youngster from Yelverton helped play a major role in helping the South West win the Devon Army Cadet Force national swimming championships for the first time in many years. Greg Barnes, aged 16, of Yelverton, a Lance Corporal in the Tavistock unit was one of the swimmers representing the region at the event, which took place at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst. The Army Cadet Force is a national voluntary youth organisation for boys and girls aged 13 to 18 years. Greg was among four other cadets from the county who were involved in the competition. Greg went on to represent the ACF in the annual tri-service championships at HMS Temeraire, Portsmouth, where his team finished runners-up to the Air Training Corps. These follow successes at junior and senior level for the Devon ACF in the ACF national rugby championships at Bicester.
