A NEW football club has been established in Walkhampton after a friendly football match. Walkhampton Football Club was formed in 2006 after a decision that some local lads would play the local postmen. Around 12 lads put their name down for the football game which also included some players from the Walkhampton Wasps which disbanded seven years ago. The Walkhampton players went on to beat the postmen. After the match the players decided to form the football club. Although the team was not able to join the 2006 to 2007 Plymouth and District Combination League, they were able to join the 2007 to 2008 season. The team, which features a mixed bag of ages from 16 to 37-years old, have so far played nine games and are in the middle of the table for this season. But not only is the team gradually climbing their way to the top of the league ? it has also gained support from a local business which has agreed to sponsor the team. Chris Hamley, SAAB Specialists in Yelverton, has donated money for league fees, bought football strips and paid for sponsor names on shirts. He also recently sponsored fleeces for the winter league. Chris and his wife Lorraine are keen supporters of the team and come to watch the games regularly. They are now much more supporters than sponsors. Simon Stoke, manager of the team, said: ?The lads are enjoying it ? the whole town is behind us and we have great sponsorship. The whole village is talking about it ? it?s a village team.? l Pictured above: Chris Hamley, sponsor of Walkhampton Football Club presents Simon Stokes, manager of the club with their new football strip.
