MEMBERS of Weir Quay Sailing Club spent a chilly day out on the water recently by undertaking Royal Yacht Association's safety boat training in preparation for the start of the sailing season. Two hardy club members — Steve Kirby and Nick Ferneyhough volunteered to capsize their dinghies, throw them into the water and wait to be rescued. They were soon plucked safely from the River Tamar by fellow members undertaking RYA safety boat certificate training — Clive Moody, Richard Gould, Chris Miller and Robin Brew — under the watchful eye of Artie Shore of Walrus Marine, Calstock. The Weir Quay SC's season casts off in April and the club has a fleet of eight dinghies for members to use so organisers say that there are no excuses for prospective members who don't have their own! Club member Cathy Sharp told the Times said: 'Activities throughout the spring and summer include Friday night cadet training - for 12 year olds and over - and racing or fun sailing on Sundays. 'There are many other goings on to enjoy including a thriving cruising yacht, social events and speaker evenings.'
