THE project to bring to Tavistock College a full athletics track and field facilities took another step forward with the launch of its own website, http://www.track4tavistock.com">www.track4tavistock.com In launching the site, Tavistock Athletic Club chairman Allan Herdman stressed the need to keep the ambitious project in the public eye. He said: 'Apart from giving people some idea of what will be emerging on the Tavistock College site when building gets underway, we want to be able to promote the things we will be doing beforehand to turn this into a reality.' Although much of the funding is beginning to fall into place, the parties behind the scheme — Tavistock College, Kelly College and Tavistock Athletic Club — are committed to raising at least £100,000 towards the costs. Mr Herdman added: 'This will not come easy. We have some fantastic plans, but to pull these off we need to engage the whole of the Tavistock community. This will be a community facility and we are confident that the people of Tavistock will support the cause.' Colin Eves and Mark Steed, heads at Tavistock and Kelly Colleges, are both running in the 2007 London Marathon and will be appealing for sponsorship which will go to the track fund. Also in April 2007 will be the Bedford Mile — a spectacular event which will hit Tavistock town centre as more than 1,000 runners run, jog or walk from Bedford Square, along Plymouth Road to Drake's Statue and back. Event organiser Martin Exley said: 'We are looking for every runner who takes part to raise £100 in sponsorship. And we'll be laying on a real carnival during the day with entertainment, food and drink and, who knows, the odd celebrity or two!'
