YOUR report (June 23) about the condition of the former Old Folk's Rest Room' (OFRR), Tavistock, highlighted recent damage, unlawful entries and a general 'running-down' of the empty building.
Comments you recorded from both the developer of the site and the local council did not seem to indicate that any way forward was being sought in order to deal with this problem, with the result that the building could quickly become an eyesore in the centre of Tavistock.
The trustees of Tavistock Area Support Services (TASS), would like to remind the developer, the council and the people of Tavistock that when the OFRR was forced to leave its premises it was taken under the umbrella of TASS at the Anchorage Centre and is now part of the organisation.
Furthermore, we, at TASS, are still very much in favour of re-opening the OFRR at its original site for the benefit of the people of Tavistock, and are willing to talk to any other parties, at any time, about doing so.
Our great fear is that this building will continue to be ignored by the developers, and, as its history disappears from our minds and people pass on, they will eventually be successful with a planning request to the local authority.
To date, the developers have been unsuccessful with their plans and planning inspectors have strongly indicated that this building should remain a community facility.
