PETER Jones of Tavistock recently asked some questions about housing in the local area. I can confirm that we currently have 628 local people registered in West Devon who are in housing need. There are a further 905 people on the housing register, who may have an insecure tenancy or be on a low income, and would also like to be considered for an affordable home. West Devon Borough Council works very hard to make sure local people are given priority when it comes to newly built affordable homes and has taken full advantage of changes in legislation which allow councils to shape their housing policy to take account of local needs. In our towns, including Tavistock, 50% of all new affordable properties will be allocated to people who live, work or have immediate family in the area. In the rural areas, priority for all affordable housing is given to people who are in housing need and have a strong local connection. It is simply not true to say that local people would have no priority for affordable homes built in the borough. I would also like to point out that when Mr Jones used my quote he missed out the middle section. I actually said: 'The biggest challenge for our borough is enabling growth and providing much needed homes and jobs whilst, at the same time, protecting the beautiful place that is West Devon.' We are currently developing Our Plan which is a single strategic plan for community needs and council services between now and 2031. So, if you feel strongly about the future of West Devon, I would encourage you to get involved and tell us what they think. Please visit or call 01822 813600 and speak to the strategic planning team. Cllr Philip Sanders Leader of West Devon Borough Council
