ON our war memorial in Guildhall Square are inscribed the names of 119 Tavistock men who lost their lives during the first world war.

We shall soon, in front of this memorial, conduct our annual act of remembrance in which, however briefly, the sacrifice made by these young men will be recalled. But, before their lives and deaths drift too far into history, I would like to suggest that some permanent record incorporating some details of these 119 men should be produced.

I therefore intend to write, in tribute to them, a book in which one page will be devoted to personal information, and if possible a picture, of each of the 119 who fell.

I would like to appeal now to all those living in our area, or beyond, who, through family ties or through any other connection, have any information about the lives of any of these men, to contact me.

They can write to me at 2 Courtlands Close, Tavistock, or phone me on 613597.

'We will remember them'.
