I WAS a student at Okehampton College until 1999 and as such entered two 35-mile and one 45-mile Ten Tors Events.
There are many others who have done the same, some even entering and completing the 55-mile event.
The training we were given by Mrs Baxter was second to none. From February to May we trained almost every week learning the survival skills and developing fitness which allowed us to complete the event.
We gained an appreciation of the moor and the skills learnt were for life. Our success reflected our
training. Some teams from other areas were not so well trained and although entered for the event, pulled out and did not complete the walk.
Okehampton College have taken a break of one year to ensure that future teams are trained to the same high standard and given those skills for life.
It would have been more appropriate to have read a leading article last year on 'Twenty years of success for the college'.
