YOUNG people and sport will top the agenda for West Devon's new Mayor Cllr Robin Musgrave who was elected to the post for the forthcoming year last Wednesday.

Cllr Musgrave, who has represented the Bere Ferrers ward for ten years, is the borough council's youth and sport champion.

He told the council's annual meeting that it is an appropriate time for him to take on the ceremonial role with the London 2012 Olympics just a few months away.

He said: 'We face a challenging but also an exciting year. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations are almost upon us and I can happily say that the Olympic Torch is on its way.'

A retired teacher, Cllr Musgrave has been involved with numerous voluntary activities involving young people since moving to Devon with his family more than 20 years ago.

He worked with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as a qualified expedition assessor for 15 years, was appointed a governor at Tavistock College for four years and was a member of Tavistock and District Youth Forum for many years. Cllr Musgrave and his wife, Jane, who will be his mayoress, are also respite foster carers.

A keen sportsman, he coaches junior members of Tavistock Athletics Club, is a member of Weir Quay Sailing Club and a founder member of the Tamar and Tavy Gig Club.

Tributes were paid to outgoing mayor Cllr Donald Horn and his wife, Mary.

Cllr James McInnes said Cllr Horn and Mary had been 'wonderful ambassadors'.

Cllr McInnes stood down as leader of the council after six years in the post. Cllr Musgrave praised his 'calm and unruffled manner'.

Cllr Philip Sanders was elected as the new leader of the council with Cllr Bob Baldwin as deputy leader.

The audit committee will be chaired by Cllr Debo Sellis, and the community services committee chairman is Cllr Robert Oxborough.

The overview and scrutiny committee chairman is Cllr David Cloke and the planning and licensing committee chairman is Cllr Christine Marsh. The standards committee will be chaired by Mrs Victoria Spence and the resources committee chairman is Cllr Sanders.

Cllr Bill Cann was elected as deputy mayor.
