WHEN a property goes on sale in Mary Tavy, the estate agent will often say it is a popular and sought after village, which of course it is — apart from the 'eyesore' which was once a petrol station and garage. Plus traffic going much too fast along the main road! Situated on the edge of Dartmoor, lovely rural walks, a busy village hall, two excellent pubs, one with a Sunday carvery and not forgetting the Post Office and Stores at the very core of things, run admirably by Martin and Tracey, who have settled in so well since last April and are always so helpful. We are also very privileged to have our two churches — the lovely old parish church tucked away at the end of Lane End and more prominently, the Wesleyan Methodist Church, situated opposite the war memorial, erected in 1921, three years after the Armistice of 1918. The church consists of three buildings, the chapel, the hall and the link building, built 20 years ago, connecting the two. This year, we are celebrating 180 years! Opened in 1835 and still open. This amazing place is steeped in history, with numerous generations having passed through its ancient doors. During this 180th year, we will have coffee mornings, craft fairs, keep fit sessions, concerts, Wednesday morning coffee and chat sessions and afternoon fellowship meetings, as well as our regular Sunday morning service at 10.30am , followed by coffee. Why not join us? We do not bite! A very warm welcome always, to all! Tony Smith Lydford
