MORE than 200 youngsters and their parents at Tavistock Rugby Club on Sunday enjoyed a day of tag rugby, sumo wrestling, barbecuing and socialising.
A special guest came to visit, in the form of Tom Varndell of London Wasps and England. Tom presented awards, threw some balls with the minis, signed a rugby ball and posed for photographs.
Rob Masters, rugby development officer for the RFU presented the RFU 'Seal of Approval' to previous chairman and fixtures secretary, Ray Robinson and Simon O'Connor-Thomson.
Trevor Masters and Jeff Lawson, president and secretary of TRFC also attended and Jeff ended up barbecuing all afternoon! Thanks Jeff. After the minis had completed their tag rugby and all the presentations were finished the juniors and adults took to the field for a spot of touch rugby. Four teams competed for the Jo Williams Cup – The U15s, the U16s plus coach Erik Sprangle and Dad John Budden, the U15 girls plus manager Mhairi McCall, coach Roger Page and dads Pete Rodgers and Graham Dawe and the U12 dads of Mark Hillson, Mark Lamerton, Nick Bailley, Nigel Berridge and James Mills helped by Duncan Law, Will Tompkins and Josh Sutton of TRFC senior team.
The cup was won by the mixture of U12 dads and senior players, with the U15's runners-up. Mhairi McCall for TRFC minis and juniors, said: 'Thank you to Lawrence and Alex Berridge of the U12s for their very firm refereeing! A lot of fun was had on the day and thanks go to everyone who helped to make the occasion a success – especially the workers in the kitchen.'
