A SPATE of dog attacks in the Yelverton area has resulted in seven dead sheep, another severely savaged and two more with aborted lambs.
Karla Mckechnie, Dartmoor Livestock Protection Officer, this week issued a warning to dog owners that it is a criminal offence for dogs to worry livestock.
Karla said: 'It is evident that we are witnessing a serious problem with out of control dogs in the Long Ash area of Roborough Down.'
Karla and local farmers have spoken to residents and dog walkers in this area and handed out information cards with Karla's contact details, asking for anyone to come forward with information that might help identify these dog owners.
Karla said: 'Without witnesses of dogs chasing and attacking sheep, and correct identification such as the dog-owner's car registration plate, it is difficult to stop this savaging of livestock.
'Farmers are desperately concerned and angry, and with lambing season nearly upon us this situation warrants a serious warning.'
Roborough Down and surrounding areas are now being regularly patrolled by the Dartmoor National Park rangers to help clamp down on this serious problem.
A successful prosecution for sheep worrying last year resulted in a fine and a criminal record for the owner of the dog.
'There will be further prosecutions if the right evidence and information is available to us and the police,'said Karla.
