THE Food Standards Agency has issued a warning through West Devon Borough Council about contaminated vodka which could be on sale in the region.

The Food Standards Agency urgently warns anyone who may have bought a brand of vodka called Imperial Valkonov Vodka, that the product could contain dangerous levels of methanol.

The agency is warning anyone who may have a bottle of this vodka, the origin of which is not yet known, not to drink it. Anyone who has a bottle or sees it on sale should contact West Devon environmental health department.

Effects of methanol poisoning can be of serious harm to health, and include abdominal pain, drowsiness and dizziness, blurred vision leading to blindness, and breathing difficulties.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning can be delayed for several hours and anyone who thinks they may have drunk this product should seek immediate medical advice.

The Food Standards Agency was alerted after 24 bottles of the vodka were found on sale in the Loughborough area similar to those previously found to contain high levels of methanol in Manchester.

The bottles are marked ?Distributed for K.M.G. 57, Bodana Khmelnitskogo Str 236039, Kallinginrad, Russia for EEC?.

Anyone who has purchased a bottle or seen it on sale is asked to contact the borough council?s environmental health department on 01822 813600.
