PEOPLE in West Devon are being warned about a company, claiming to be working with the police, that is making phone calls to residents at home, requesting personal details.
Representatives from the company have been calling people in the Mary Tavy area, asking them to take part in a survey which they claim is in collaboration with Devon and Cornwall Police.
The company claims to be selling home security alarm systems and personal alarms.
Once personal details are obtained, residents are encouraged to make an appointment with a company representative.
Bob Bunney, Devon and Cornwall Police crime reduction manager, said: 'We would like to clarify that we have not commissioned any organisation to carry out this type of survey and nor would we conduct surveys asking such personal information.
'We work closely with our colleagues at local authorities across Devon and Cornwall on crime prevention and community safety matters and while we would encourage home owners to ensure they have adequate home security we would never endorse any one particular company selling such products or services.
'We would encourage anyone who has concerns around the trading practices of businesses to contact their local trading standards department.'
Devon and Cornwall Police have been working with West Devon Borough Council to warn local residents.
Cllr Terry Pearce, the borough council's ward member for Mary Tavy, said: 'I was very concerned when a number of local households reported this matter to me.
'I would urge residents to be on their guard and seek advice if they are worried about the methods used by any company.
'It is worth remembering that you do not have to accept cold callers, either in person or on the phone. It is perfectly acceptable to tell them to go away.'
To report concerns about trading practice or to make a complaint about a specific business, call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506.
Crime prevention advice is available online at the Devon and Cornwall police website.
If anyone has a specific crime reduction query or a non-emergency concern they can call 101 and ask for the crime reduction department.
'No cold callers' stickers are available free of charge from West Devon Borough Council at Kilworthy Park in Tavistock or call 01822 813600.
